When to Counter Vel'Koz
Pick Vel'Koz when your team wants to dominate objective standoffs and chip opponents before they ever reach the fight. He is especially effective into slower, front-facing drafts that have to walk through his geometry and stand in his zones. Vel'Koz also fits comps that already have peel or engage and need the mid or support slot to add sustained ranged threat.
How to Counter Vel'Koz Strategy
Do not approach Vel'Koz only from the front, because that gives him the exact straight-line targets his spells punish best. Side-angle engage and fast collapses are stronger answers than slowly absorbing poke and waiting for him to open with his full combo. Once he is forced to cancel or reposition during his ultimate, much of his fight impact disappears.
