Swain Champion Overview and Playstyle Guide
Understand Swain's drain-tank mage style, when his crowd control and sustained fights fit a draft, and what range and mobility expose him.

Swain Counter Strategy & Strategy (Patch 16.11)
When to Counter Swain
Pick Swain when the enemy team is likely to fight in groups and your composition wants a durable magic-damage presence that punishes clustered battles. He is especially effective with allies that can start fights or hold enemies in place long enough for him to remain attached. Swain also fits drafts that do not need pure burst from mid or support and instead want a champion who dominates extended combat.
How to Counter Swain Strategy
Do not give Swain the slow, front-facing fights he wants where multiple targets stay within his drain radius. Spread before full commits and attack from ranges or angles that force him to choose one direction instead of standing in the middle of everyone. Once his major sustain window is exhausted or his access is broken, he is far easier to finish.
Swain Targeted Build Strategy
Knowing Swain's ideal items helps you build optimal counters.
Swain Key Weaknesses
Swain needs enemies nearby for long enough to convert his sustained pattern, so heavy mobility and range naturally create problems for him. He also lacks explosive access, which means he often depends on someone else starting the fight or opponents walking into his zone.
Worst Matchups for Swain
Xerath, Azir, Cassiopeia, Vayne, and Syndra consistently challenge Swain by controlling range and punishing him before he can anchor a fight. These matchups deny the close, extended interactions where his drain-heavy style shines.
Best Champions Against Swain
Nautilus, Rell, Amumu, Ashe, and Jarvan IV are ideal with Swain because they keep enemies close enough for his pull and sustained damage to overwhelm them. Their engage turns his medium range from a limitation into a strength.
Swain Counter Tips & Summary
Swain is a battlemage who thrives in drawn-out fights through pull setups, area control, and sustained damage while draining multiple targets. He offers strong mid-range teamfighting and pick conversion, but his short effective range can be punished by mobility and disciplined kiting.
