Pick Illaoi when the enemy team has several melee champions or wants to force fights by running straight into your space. She is especially effective into drafts that struggle to disengage after committing or clear a side lane without standing near walls and tentacles. Illaoi also fits teams that already have engage elsewhere and want top lane to punish overextension rather than start every fight.
How to Counter Illaoi Strategy
Do not fight Illaoi on top of her full setup or after she lands Test of Spirit and still controls the ground around it. She becomes much less threatening when opponents disengage from her ultimate and re-enter only after the tentacle burst window has passed. Mobile spacing and wave control matter because she hates being dragged into repeated resets with no established zone.
